Remembering Gino Buzzanca


Gerolamo Buzzanca was born on March 8, 1912 in Messina, Sicily, Italy. Buzzanca was the ucle of actor Lando Buzzanca [1935- ]. He began his career in the Sicilain theater in such plays as Pirandello and Verga where he learned the use of dialects. Discovered by director Luigi Zampa, his film career started in 1953 in the film “Anni facili”, directed by Zampa, a film in which he played the part, of a lively and colorful fascist. This led to a long career as a character actor, often portraying mafia and military figures, oppressive husbands and impoverished noblemen. As Gino Buzzanca he appeared in four Euro-westerns “Rebels on the Loose” (1966), “Cjamango”, “The Handsome, the Ugly and the Stupid” and “Don’t Wait Django, Shoot” (all 1967). In the last western he was credited under the pseudonym Bill Jackson. In all he appeared in over 50 films before his death in Rome on May 5, 1985. Today we remember Gino Buzzanca on what would have been his 100th birthday.
