After accomplishing the mission, Sternau is persuaded and goes to Count Don Ferdinand of Rodriganda, using his influence to turn him against the French Empire. The son of Don Ferdinand, Alfonso, instead convinces his father to fight a duel with the doctor. The father is mortally wounded, but before he dies he disinherit his son and puts him under the tutelage of the doctor. But Sternau is captured by the French and Alfonso, accusing him of the murder of his father, sees him condemned to death. The doctor is saved, but has to deal with the greed of the Count and the traitors of General Juarez, who want to get to the ancient treasure of the Aztecs.
