Remembering Wolfgang Kieling


Wolfgang Kieling was born on March 16, 1924 in Berlin, Germany. Wolfgan began his career in films as a child in his native Germany. Kieling appeared in a few American films such as Alfred Hitchcock's “Torn Curtain” (1966), where he played an East German agent brutally slain by Paul Newman’s character, and had a small role in “$” (aka, “The Heist”) in 1971, starring Warren Beatty. In a British film “Amsterdam Affair” (1968), he portrayed the fictional Dutch detective Van der Valk several years before Barry Foster was cast in the same role for the British TV series. He appeared often on German TV, including the first episode of ‘Waldweg’ in 1974.
 
The best of his later roles was in the film “Out of Order” (1984), originally titled “Abwärts”. In the German-language version of Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland” he dubbed the mad hatter.
 
Kieling appeared in four Euro-westerns beginning with the 1938 film “Women for Golden Hill” (1938), “Bandits of the Rio Grande” and “Duel at Sundown” (both 1965). He also was the German voice of Lee Van Cleef in “Day of Anger” (1967) and the voice of William Bogart in “Santana Kills Them All” (1970).
 
Kieling passed away on October 7, 1985 in Hamburg, Germany.
 
Today we remember Wolfgang Kieling on what would have been his 90th birthday.
