Ex-sheriff Fred Leinster, having been driven out of office by Dixon after been found guilty of drunkenness which caused the death of his family, is unwillingly involved in the abduction of little Jerry, son of Jane, a widow, who owns a farm. Fred is caught by Bill Cochran, the man who has succeeded him in the office of sheriff. Jane convinces Bill of Fred’s innocence, and he manages to escape and reach the old mine where the kidnappers are holding Jerry prisoner. The mine allows the child to get out through an open passage on the side of the mountain. Fred is taken prisoner by the bandits, who suspect him of having taken over twenty thousand dollars in ransom paid for the release of Jane's son. Fred is surprised to discover that the kidnappers have acted under the orders of Sheriff Cochran. Upon reaching the mine, Cochran tries to kill Fred, but the ex-sheriff, with the help of Jane’s ranch hands, eliminates Bill and his gang.
